How Do You Top That?

2010 Annual Picnic Plans Have Begun!

Stay Tuned!

Spinnler Point, July 25, 2009.

WHAT AN EVENT! Our 2009 Annual Picnic was, without a doubt, a resounding success at revitalizing this event having attracted nearly 200 adults and over 50 children!! Attendees, including many “old timers” who have been permanent residents or property owners for over 30 years, said it was the “best ever.”

Bicycle Parade

Resident, Bob Wilson, served as Grand Marshall and led this colorful procession of bicycles, golf carts and ATVs all decorated in the “Red, White & Blue.” Early skeptics speculated that this event might interest a handful of kids and were stunned by the outstanding participation of approximately two dozen “paraders” who assembled at the beginning of Shore Road and slowly made their way down to Areaway 2, the traditional site of the picnic. Some were modestly decorated with red, white and blue crepe paper and others chose a theme, like “Christmas in July.” Onlookers felt, without question, that the parade set the festive tone for the entire day.

Horseshoe Tournament

Eight teams signed up prior to the event to participant in the first-ever Spinnler Point Annual Picnic Horseshoe Tournament. New and permanent horseshoe pits were constructed by the Picnic Committee with materials generously paid for by one of our residents.

And the teams weren’t just all guys. The ladies participated, too, and were able to hold their own, scoring several ringers for their team. Participants included:

  • Gary Ham & Russ Malloy
  • Alan & Peggy Devitt
  • Don Tantala and son, Ryan
  • Jim Emig & daughter, Kelsey
  • Herman Schmid & Ray Korup
  • Vinny DiMarco & Rocky Taranto
  • Ed King and friend, Tim Messer
  • Alan Shebonsky and son, Jeff

Here are the results:

CONGRATULATIONS to Ed King and partner, Tim Messer, each receiving a Spinnler Point baseball cap and new Spinnler Point coffee mug as their first place prize.

Face Painting

Kristy Schaeffer unselfishly put in a non-stop, 8+ hour day painting the faces of approximately 50 children . . . and some adults.

Sand Art & Tattoos

Janice Miraglia helped the kids create their own, colorful sand art keepsakes or get one of the many temporary water-based tattoos.

Magician

Through the generosity of one of our members, the kids were entertained by a professional magician who entertained them with spectacular balloon creations.

Disc Jockey

For the adults, another member generously donated the services of DJ Pete, a local disc jockey,  who provided background music through most of the evening. We even complimented his selection of “audience age appropriate” music only to discover that all selections were the result of requests from the audience. “That made my job easy,” he said.

Magic Castle (“Moon Bounce”)

This inflatable entertainment unit let the kids bounce and burn off energy most of the day. We owe a ton of appreciation to Tom Baldwin who spent most of the day serving as “monitor” to insure the kids were enjoying themselves in a safe and orderly manner. We also have to thank Edwin Rhode who generously allowed us to power the air pump with electricity from his home and park the unit partially onto his property.

Sack Races

With brand new equipment we will be able to use each year, the kids and some adults participated in picnic-traditional sack races.

Food, food and more food!

Folks came through with the traditional participant-provided entrees and desserts all set up under a large tent . . . just in case we had a transient shower pass through. Hot dogs, hamburgers, Taylor Pork Roll, meatballs, sausage and peppers, pasta, hot wings, baked beans, salads and much, much more lined the tables to satisfy the taste buds of those lined up on both sides of the table. If you went home hungry after this event . . . shame on you! Serving lunch and dinner, and not knowing ahead of time how many folks would be coming, we temporarily ran out of paper plates and had to scramble home for more. We’ll fix that for next year.

Merchandise and Prizes, too?

If all of the above weren’t enough, this year, we offered custom-embroidered sweatshirts, T-shirts, Hoodies and golf shirts. All navy blue, 50% cotton 50% polyester, Jerzee brand apparel with the Spinnler Point logo embroidered in white . . . name optional. This merchandise, along with the 13 ounce Spinnler Point coffee mugs will be featured on this website throughout the year in case you would still like to order some for special occasions or holiday gifts.

With donations from various Spinnler members, Picnic Committee ladies assembled a number of beautiful gift baskets, displayed on a table with a related ticket bag in front of each . . . similar to what is seen at silent auctions.  Picnic attendees could purchase any number of raffle tickets and place as many tickets as they wished in the bags for whatever gift baskets they preferred.  The winners included:

  • Children’s Basket – Lucille McHale
  • Destress Basket – Rich Dougert
  • Champagne Basket – Herman Schmid
  • Lake Theme Basket – Lenny Antonucci
  • Italian Basket – Mark Richardson
  • All American Basket – Mark Richardson
  • Mexican Basket – Rob Miraglia
  • Autographed Baseball – Rob Miraglia
  • Jets Tickets – Peggy Devitt
  • Basket of Cheer – Nevin Barndt
  • Irish Basket – Dave Zeiler
  • Large Basket of Cheer – Lenny Antonucci

The traditional raffle tickets were also drawn with the following recipients:

  • Dave Zieler - $125
  • Tony Marseglia - $75
  • Joe Duffy - $50
  • Roy Finney - $25

In Summary

While the Picnic Committee put together the plans for this event, it would not have been a success had it not been for the enthusiastic participation and generosity of everyone who attended. Our sincere appreciation to those whose special donations added to the fun and excitement and raised our annual picnic up a few notches in the popularity ratings.

Last but not least, we have to thank the Picnic Committee and volunteers who worked extremely hard planning and coordinating this event:
